Educational Support Project

Thanks to the generous contribution of our well-wishers in 2019, proceeds from our first fundraising event permitted us to provide school supplies to more than one thousand children in a local school.

Background

The Bakoswiss Educational Support Project is an initiative of Bakoswiss, after carrying out an appraisal on pupils performance in public exams. The results focus on the two main public exams in primary schools (the first learning certificate and the common entrance examination into the secondary schools). It was discovered that due to the parents’ financial situation most of the pupils do not have the necessary learning materials such as text and writing books; pens and pencils. The lack of these materials were mostly found among female pupils/ young girls.

Bakoswiss aims at supporting these pupils in order to contribute to the increase of literacy rate in Kupe Muanengube Division of the South-West Region of Cameroon.

Kupe-Muanengouba is one out of the six divisions in the South west Region of the Republic of Cameroon. Its capital is Bangem. It is made up of three sub divisions namely, Bangem, Tombel and Nguti sub divisions. The division covers an area of 3,404 km2 with a total population now estimated to be well above 105,579, as per the 2005 population and housing census. The mainstream occupation of the people is agriculture. Coffee and cocoa are their main cash crops but they have of recent, greatly relied on plantain farming as a stable and sustainable source of income.

— School principal

An important area of interest is education. Three quarter of the population of the division rely on income generated from the sales of agricultural products to educate their children and since the income is usually inadequate, training of children becomes difficult. The government, in a bid to foster education, has created primary schools in nearly all the villages in the division and since most of the creations are politically motivated, little is done to fully provide infrastructure and equipment to run the schools. Parents are left to bear the brunt of providing not only school needs of their children but equally made to defray the day to day running costs of schools within their vicinities through the setting up of Parent Teachers’ Associations (PTAs) to work in synergy with school authorities in order to effectively run schools. Some of the schools are opened and ran by Churches and individuals. Below is a comprehensive list of primary schools in the division.
